Passage from Fall River to Beaufort

From October 15-19, my dad, John, my brother, Rob, and myself made the passage from Fall River, MA to Beaufort, NC. This was a passage of over 580 miles and took 95 1/2 hours. We experienced all sorts of conditions from 15-25 knot headwinds to reaching in 35 knot gusts. All told, the voyage was long enough to truly fall into the rhythm of 4 hour watches where we were four on and eight off. This video documents the effort.

I’ve been here in Beaufort for nearly two weeks and it’s a terrific town. All the houses are named after their original owners and the locals are welcoming and friendly. The best place to find them is at the Backstreet Pub where there is often live music and always cold beer and friendly folks.

John is flying back down to Beaufort today and we will make the 200+ mile passage to Charleston, leaving early Saturday morning. I expect winds of 15-20 out of the west so it will be into the wind, but not close-hauled. I’ll be sad to leave Beaufort but I’m excited to check out Charleston!
